In fact the solution to unlock is simple: first make sure that the battery is not flat (allow an hour or two to load in case of doubt) then end with a paperclip unfolded, press for at least 10 seconds on the Reset button located next to the memory card (the small hole). The TomTom should then turn back on without problems! All the subtlety of the trick is to keep the reset pressed long!
